Positive Dog Puppy Training
What can you do about a dog which never comes to you? What about a dog whose barks cause a disturbance or a dog who jumps all over your surprised visitors? Just read on! The answer is positive dog puppy training.
Soldiers in the army have to go through basic training don't they, as obedience to specific orders can mean life or death. The same principle applies to your dog, as a member of your family platoon. Teaching simple commands to a puppy or even to an older dog of 5 years and in some cases even 10 years is quite possible due to a dogs inheritant intelligence and submissiveness. But remember, for a dog to be submissive, it must know that you are the boss! That is why positive dog puppy training is essential. More on that later.
Ever heard of an Alpha dog, sounds like a military term, and for good reason. An Alpha dog is the leader of a pack, and to your dog, your family is the pack. In a dogs mind either he is the Alpha dog or you are, it all depends on the training you give to your pet. For example in the wilds of raw nature, the pack leader has the best warmest sleeping area, with the highest elevation. Like all masters it also eats the first amongst the pack. Now if you let your dog sleep on your raised bed, who in its mind is the leader? Instead give your dog some subordination exercises such as stroking its belly, while it is laying on its back, a position of subservience. Or look your puppy in its eyes, until it backs away.
Try to teach one word commands, demonstrate what you mean, give praise when the actual command is obeyed. Such praise requires an affectionate tone, whereas displeasure can be expressed with a sharp NO which is prolonged. A dog will always know what you mean, hence there is no need for physical hitting of the animal. Your tone of voice will indicate without question to a dogs mind your pleasure and displeasure, your reward and your reprimand.
Always reprimand a dog immediately after its failing to obey, do not leave it till later as it may misunderstand the connection between the two events, that is, the failure to obey and the reprimand itself. In some cases you may need to shake the scruff of a dogs neck gently, while prolonging the NO command.
SIT! Is a very important one word command, your dog must understand it, if you are to exercise control. Hence place your dog on a lead, give the SIT command, push its hind legs down and lift up its head. Do not forget to praise until obedience becomes automatic.
Next in the dog obedience training program we must use the command STAY to get our dog to stay put after obeying the command to SIT. This is accomplished by using the command in an affirmative tone while standing in front with our palm held out facing him. Do this along with praise until you can increase the sitting times in stages while also increasing the space between the two of you.
Now learn to tug the lead while saying COME, if after learning this required action, he fails to respond to the command, simply run in the opposite direction and he will give chase. Always associate the command COME with pleasure and reward or he will not obey! If in training he fails to respond appropriately, do not lose your rag, as this will associate displeasure with this very important order.
If your dog is in the habit of jumping over you, try backing off, use the one word command OFF, followed immediately by SIT. As always give him plenty of praise.
In conclusion, all single word commands must be spoken consistently, also associate your dogs name with what is positive, hence never use its name when disciplining, such as when using NO!
Potty training for a puppy usually begins when its between 6 to 8 weeks of age. Keeping in mind that a dog by nature does not like to toilet its sleeping place, hence get to understand its time keeping for elimination and train it to understand where its area is for easing nature. On waking up, after play time, after a meal or before sleep, take him out to the appointed area. As always give praise.
Always watch out for signs that your puppy needs to relieve itself, if an accident should occur, scold it appropriately and put it outside. Be sure to wash the site of the incident with vinegar in water so as to remove the smell to prevent your puppy from seeking out the same place again.
A dogs nature may be to pass water when greeting you. This is an act of submission which is not deliberate on the part of your dog. It happens naturally. Do not reprimand your dog under these circumstances, which should end within 2 years, no doubt to you relief!
