Epa Fish Oil Has A Very Sharp Brother

There are many articles which tout the outstanding benefits of EPA fish oil, notably in the field of bipolar disorder and heart conditions, such as the prevention of blood clotting, which is becoming more common in patients who have undergone any kind of surgery for a medical condition. EPA is also an astonishing anti inflammatory and hence is often recommended in health stores in treating joint disorders and skin complaints involving inflammation.

However, we think it is prudent to recommend a product which rather than being an EPA fish oil is actually an EPA DHA fish oil. The reason for this is because our brains and retina are largely made up of DHA fatty acid. I am sure you will agree that our mental agility and eye sight are very much valued and must be retained at all cost, in order to enjoy a high quality life now and into our later years.

When I was suffering from cancer 10 years ago, one of the first books which I ever read in the field of nutrition was one dealing with the research done among Eskimos. It was from these studies that it was realized that EPA fatty acid was a wonder nutrient for the heart and many other diseased conditions.

The news sped around the world and so today EPA omega 3 fish oil is a respected and well known supplement in every health store and in every health magazine. It was not until years later that EPA's big brother came to light, and even now, this brother DHA fatty acid is still not really known to the general population.

Why then do we prefer a DHA EPA fish oil omega3 rather than an EPA DHA fish oil? As discussed above both oils are absolutely essential for maintenance of health. Their combined health benefits are beyond question in the world of clinical trials and data. However, a DHA dominant fish oil, in which DHA is the real big brother and EPA is the little brother, is recommended because the DHA fatty acid can easily lose its chemical bonds and become EPA if the body should require it.

But for the body to convert EPA into DHA would be very difficult as it would require the creation of extra bonds. To lose bonds is easier than creating new chemical bonds. To use an illustration, it is quicker to cut a branch off a tree than to wait for a tree to grow one.

One report that I was reading indicated that almost 100,000 people die in the United States each year from a deficiency of omega3 oils. While nuts, seeds and flax oil are very beneficial, their conversion from a fatty acid known as ALA, into EPA and DHA oils, are not efficient, and as regards the DHA produced, the conversion results are negligible. This makes it all the more important to take a DHA EPA fish oil, while obtaining other beneficial nutrients from our other friends, nuts and seeds.
